This role was responsible for the functional and fiscal development of the new state of the art Birthing Center. Also incorporated into this position was direct marketing presentations establishing allegiances with Greater Cincinnati area hospitals, recruitment of medical and nursing personnel. Monitor and maintain compliance with all state and federal regulatory commissions, including JCAHO. The redesign of the physical and professional environment established Dearborn County Hospital’s credibility as a viable competitor with the greater Cincinnati area hospitals. The communities serviced by DCH now have increased choices for women’s health care. This position of leadership contributed directly to the growth of DCH’s program, increased reputation in the medical community, and total number of admissions for the hospital increased by 70%. The Obstetrical environment grew from barely 180 births/year to 500+births/year. The existing Labor and Delivery unit consisted of 2 delivery rooms and 5 post partum beds. The existing medical staff was 1 OB/GYN, 2 Family Practioners, 1 Midwife and 1 general surgeon. The physical environment reconstruction established seven LDRPN rooms, Two ante-natal rooms, two emergency OR suites, a consultation room and formal family waiting room. The professional staff increased as well, with the addition of 4 OB/GYN’s , 3 Family Practioners, 2 midwives, 3 pediatricians, 25 active RN’s and 3 unit clerks. This increase in professional staff and marketing projects resulted in 500 +births/year, reflective of 3X’s the births of the previous years prior to opening the Birthing Center. Additionally, establishing policy and procedures based upon AWOHNN’s endorsed Standards of Practice, collaboration with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Transport team, all nursing personnel were educated and certified (when applicable) to care for the critically ill neonate. Certifications in Electric Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring, Neonatal Resuscitation, CPR were obtained, advanced Obstetrical/postpartum complications, and at risk pre-natal criteria established.
